SEA LION

EXTRAVERSION

Sea Lion Wisdom

“My extraversion is a gift of my animal nature.

It allows me to find energy in crowds, joy in laughter, and purpose in connection.

The Sea Lion teaches me that being sociable is not noise—it is the warmth that draws others to the same rock.

Today, I choose to let the Sea Lion remind me that my enthusiasm is a gift to those around me.

I am allowed to be fully, freely, and fiercely social.”

Sea Lion Behavior

The Sea Lion is one of the most gregarious marine mammals, gathering in dense aggregations of a thousand or more on beaches, docks, and buoys. They haul out together, pile on top of each other, and engage in constant vocalization. Sea Lions are playful, intelligent, and easily trained. They exhibit a variety of social behaviors, such as resting, defending territory, nursing, barking, and “rafting” (entering the water with a flipper out to warm themselves). The Sea Lion’s extraversion is not optional—it is essential for mating, rearing young, and avoiding predators. Yet even Sea Lions rest quietly in the water, floating alone, recharging for the next social burst.

Extraversion

Extraversion is the tendency to seek social interaction, enjoy being the center of attention, and feel energized by crowds. Extraverted people are often talkative, assertive, and enthusiastic. They make friends easily and thrive in team environments. The Sea Lion teaches us that social energy is a gift—but even the most extraverted sea lion needs to rest quietly in the water sometimes.

Reflect on Your Own “Animal Nature”

· Think of a time when your extraversion helped bring a group together. What did you contribute?

· Do you talk over others, or avoid silence? What would it feel like to listen more?

· Where did you learn that being outgoing is either a gift or a performance?

· If the Sea Lion could speak to you, what might it say about the joy of a crowded rock?

“The Sea Lion does not apologize for its bark—it is how the colony finds its way home.”

What do you share with the Sea Lion—and what might it teach you about your own animal nature?

The Natural World

The sea lion seen in the image is the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). These playful, intelligent animals live along the Pacific Coast, from southeast Alaska to central Mexico. They are the “trained seals” of aquarium shows, known for their barking, balancing, and bow‑riding. California sea lions are not endangered; in fact, their population has rebounded strongly since the Marine Mammal Protection Act was passed in 1972. However, they face threats from entanglement in fishing gear, pollution, and conflicts with fisheries. Giving sea lions space on docks and beaches helps them thrive.
