MALIBU MONARCH PROJECT

Our Journey

The Malibu Monarch Project was established in 2013 to restore the overwintering Monarchs in Malibu and raise awareness about the concerning decline of the Western Monarch population. Now, a decade later, our commitment to this mission is unwavering as we engage in education, habitat restoration, and collaboration with a diverse network of individuals and organizations dedicated to Monarch conservation.

Our Values

At the core of the Malibu Monarch Project is our dedication to promoting healthy biodiversity and vibrant ecosystems that support all pollinators and wildlife. We advocate for pesticide-free practices and encourage the establishment of native plant habitats on both public and private lands. Our philosophy underscores the significance of collaboration, as we work with community members to protect the natural beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains from habitat fragmentation and degradation. Through our initiatives, we aim to strengthen the community's connection to the environment, focusing particularly on the Monarch butterfly and the ecosystems that thrive in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Community Engagement and Collaboration

Our vision is to cultivate a culture of stewardship within the community. By inspiring collective efforts to protect Monarch butterflies and all wildlife in the region, we contribute to a thriving ecosystem for future generations. Effective conservation relies on partnerships; thus, we collaborate with schools, local organizations, and environmental groups to enhance our outreach and impact.

We connect with urban gardeners, farmers, Native American organizations, parkland administrators, and government bodies to create a comprehensive support network for conservation efforts. Community members can engage in hands-on activities such as planting butterfly gardens, distributing milkweed plants, and assisting with invasive weed removal. These opportunities empower individuals to see the tangible impact of their efforts on local wildlife and foster a sense of shared responsibility for conservation.

Educational Initiatives

In the coming year, we are eager to broaden our educational initiatives. Our 2025 lecture series will delve into the biodiversity and rich history of the Santa Monica Mountains, featuring experts in ecology, conservation, and local history. These sessions will provide valuable insights into the life cycle and challenges faced by Monarchs, as well as the intricate ecological networks they inhabit.

By facilitating discussions about the interconnectedness of species and habitats, we aspire to create a more informed and engaged community. We believe that enhancing our understanding of the natural world is crucial for inspiring action to protect our shared ecosystem, particularly its vulnerable inhabitants like the Monarch butterfly. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on their conservation and the overall health of our local environments.
