Meerkat Behavior

The Natural World
The meerkat seen in the image is the meerkat (Suricata suricatta suricatta), a small, playful member of the mongoose family. These charming, spontaneous animals live in the open plains and deserts of southern Africa, including the Kalahari Desert. They live in groups called mobs or clans, working together to dig burrows, watch for eagles and jackals, and raise their pups. One meerkat always stands sentinel while the others forage—but even the sentinel will take a quick play break now and then. Meerkats are not endangered. They are abundant across their range, thanks to their adaptability and their joyful, flexible way of life.
